“Happiness is not out there for us to find. The reason that it’s not out there is that it’s inside us.”
~ Sonja Lyubomirsky
You know those days when you wake up and you feel a bit down? There may be no specific reason for it, you just don’t feel yourself. You don’t have the usual spring in your step, you feel a little bit sad. It’s quite possible you can’t put your finger on exactly why you feel like it, but you can’t seem to shake off the feeling.
Hopefully this doesn’t happen to you very often, but whenever this happens to me I have a few things I like to do to make me feel better:
1) Put on upbeat music and dance and sing along to it
There is nothing better than turning your favourite happy tunes up loud and dancing as if no ones watching to make you feel good!! It’s amazing what an impact music can have on your mood.
2) Make an effort to look nice
There can be a temptation to stick on your oldest, most comfy clothes when you are not feeling great, but I find making a bit of an effort to look good, makes me feel better. It can give you that extra confidence to give you that extra spring in your step.
3) Spend time with awesome friends
If you are not feeling your best, good friends can really help to cheer you up. It can sometimes be better not to over analyse with your friends why you are feeling down, but instead just spend great time with fun people and let their positive energy rub off on you.
4) Watch a comedy to make you laugh
Laughter is the best medicine. If you put on a film or something that will make you laugh out loud, this can be a great way to cheer your mood up.
5) Get a massage
You can often be left feeling tense if you are feeling sad. Getting a massage can be a great way to relax and leave you feeling much more refreshed.
6) Organise something fun to look forward to
Organising something fun, that you will enjoy can really help to cheer you up. Think about your favourite thing to do (this can be different for everyone) and schedule it in. It might be a trip to the cinema, the theatre, to see a band, to go for a hike, anything you enjoy doing. I find that knowing that I am doing something fun later on, makes my day better as I am looking forward to it.
7) Get out in nature
You can’t beat getting out in the fresh air, getting some sun, being in nature. Breathing in the fresh country air and being outside, especially if it is a lovely day, can really boost your happiness.
Exercise can make you happier as it energises you and makes you feel more relaxed. It also releases endorphins which are chemicals that trigger a positive feeling. Getting out and getting a bit of exercise can really brighten up your day.
